Each year, thousands of children
are seriously injured from bike falls and crashes
that could have been prevented. Bicycles are vehicles,
not toys.

Don't forget the helmet
Your children might not think helmets are "cool."
You might think they cost too much.
But a helmet can save a child from serious head
injury in a fall or collision.
Help get your child into the habit of always
wearing a bike helmet when cycling.
Children, ages 6 to 12, are at the greatest risk
for bike crashes. Bike crashes can result in head
injuries or even death.

SAFE KIDS suggests that parents
restrict cycling to sidewalks, paths and driveways
until children can show how well they ride and
observe basic rules of the road (usually around
age 10).
Participate in Bike Smart, sponsored
each May by SAFE KIDS |

Bike Smart is held each May for students grades
1-4 at Southeast Missouri Hospital
It is a free safety program to teach biking and
scooter skills in a fun-filled setting.
Children should plan to spend about one hour
learning about bicycle and scooter safety, then
the entire family can join in special activities
and visit informational booths.
